This week in Science class students did an experiment about density columns, and in Mathtivity students did two of NASA’s “Space Math” problems for kids. In Humanities we’ve been studying the three branches of the US Government as well as checks and balances. Students finished the outlines for their Amendment Opinion Essays or Supreme Court Case Research Papers, and are 2/3 done with the book we’re reading, A Kid’s Guide to America’s Bill of Rights. This week, students did an explosive experiment in science class (check our Facebook and Instagram pages next week for pictures!), and did math puzzles in Mathtivitty class. In humanities we started our government unit and learned about democracy. Students started their essay outlines about an amendment to the US Constitution or a historical supreme court case, and continued to read A Kid’s Guide to America’s Bill of Rights. This week in science class students finished their unit on electricity and circuits: after vacation, we’ll start chemistry! In humanities we studied the aftermath of WWII and started studying the cold war. Today we watched Hidden Figures, and after vacation students will give their Eastern Bloc leader presentations. (Additionally, Effie and Mac will give a special presentation about the Space Race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Berlin Wall!)

This week students had Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off so the teachers could prepare for our transition back to fully in-person learning. On Thursday, April 1st had in-person school: during the day we reviewed in-person school rules and expectations, as well as safety precautions, such as fire drills, lock down drills, and covid safety guidelines. This week in humanities class we finished our unit on the holocaust, and transitioned to discussing Japanese internment camps in the United States, as well as other Japanese/American relations at the time, including Pearl Harbor and the Atomic Bombs. Students have started working on their Holocaust reading response outlines, and will write their essays next biweekly. In humanities class, students have been studying World War II and the Holocaust. This biweekly they will finish reading Number the Stars by Lowis Lowry, and start writing their Holocaust reading response essays. In mathtivity on Wednesday, students worked in groups to do an activity on remainders.
