School News

Thanks so much to all of the families who made it out to the car was on Saturday! It was a rainy and short event, but the kids had fun and that’s what matters most. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Parents’ Organization for all of their logistical planning and leg work!

Upcoming Dates/Events

Friday, September 27th (8am drop off)Field trip to the Tsongas Industrial History Center in Lowell, MA. At Historic Deerfield last week we learned all about how linen, cotton, wool, and silk were made in the pre-industrial world. At Lowell, we’re going to see how mills changed all that! In addition to seeing the very impressive mechanized looms, we’ll be doing a program called Workers on the Line, which you can learn about here.
Green River Clean Up, September 28th, 9am-12pm: The kids had a great time learning about water with our environmental science guest, David Boles, last week and are excited about cleaning up the river in a few weeks! We’re really excited for this event, especially since it fits so well with our environmental science curriculum for this year!
Walk-a-thon, Monday, October 14th: Historically we have always had school on Columbus Day because we haven’t wanted to honor him due to the atrocities he and the men under his command committed on the Tainos and other native people in Central America. Last year, several alums expressed interest in having an event on that day for them to come and visit, since they all have the day off at their high schools. Additionally, we spent all of last school year studying Native Americans in humanities class. By the end of the year, the students all concluded that they wanted to do something to give back to Native communities after all our European ancestors did to them and their ancestors. All of these factors together lead to the planning of this year’s Walk-a-thon to benefit the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, who are the descendants of the first Native Americans that the Pilgrims interacted with upon their arrival in the 1620s.
The Walk-a-thon will take place after our half day, from 1:30-5:30pm. This is also the date that we’ve rescheduled the car wash for, since we got rained out on Saturday. Additionally, we’ll have our fist ever FOUR WINDS SWAG for sale at the event to benefit the school. More information will be sent out as the event draws closer.
