School News

We had a great week-before-vacation at school last week! On Monday state and local police came to discuss school safety and run a lock down drill, and on Tuesday the fire department came to discuss fire safety and show the kids the fire truck!

In Science class, students started working together to build a food web, and in Humanities class we started discussing immigration (to watch some short yet informative videos on the topic, you can check out my slideshow from that class). On Wednesday we had school picture day (a big “thank you” to Charlotte who organized the whole thing!) and on Thursday Alethea led Part 2 of her origami workshop: Last biweekly students watched this video on origami and its applied uses in engineering, and this biweekly they made their worked together to make their own origami projects.
On Friday Tracy and Riley from Greater Boston PFLAG came to lead a workshop on LGBTQ+ inclusion, and the kids did a great job participating and asking thoughtful questions. We also want to give a big thank you to the parents who were able to attend: We understand that it was during the work day, so most families were unavailable, but it was great to have family members in the building and participating in important conversations with the students!

We hope that everybody enjoys their week off, and we’re looking forward to seeing everybody 8:30am on Monday, December 2nd!

Giving Tuesday is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the holiday season and is celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Non-profits and charities often use this event as a time to ask the community to donate to their causes, and for the first time, Four Winds School is doing the same!
It seems that everyone from our community who wants to buy a calendar has done so already, but it would be a great help if everyone could share the following link (to Rachel’s Facebook fundraiser) through email or on Facebook. Not only are the calendars a really cool collaboration between a local photographer and the Four Winds Students, but we could actually end up getting a sizable donation from this event!
Thanks to the generocity of alumni parents Michael Helmstadter and Tracy Prentiss, and the donating-matching abilities of Michael’s employeer, Salesforce, if we can raise a total of $615 (just $15 more!), then we’ll end up getting a donation of $2000!! This will be huge for the school, especially as we’ve suddenly run into a small chair emergency: after years of sturdy consistency, over half of our chairs have broken or fallen apart in the last month! If we can raise just a little more money through the calendar sales and Rachel’s Giving Tuesday fundraiser, we’ll get the $2k donation and be able to buy all new chairs for the two classrooms. So, please help spread the word (and let me know if you still want to purchase any calendars before we sell out)!
Thank you all so much for your help! Here is the link to Rachel’s Facebook Fundraiser:
